Posted on September 12 2017

Discovery Games UK are proud to have worked alongside the Mayor of London's "London Curriculum" Team to create four fun and completely free London Curriculum Family Explorer Trails.

characters

Meet Bow the Bee, Hyde the Owl, Russel the Squirrel and Purcell the Robin! These characters will join you on a journey of discovery and outdoor learning as you and your family take to the streets of London, armed with a Family Explorer Trail booklet, to find out all about this brilliant city and complete fun activities along the way.

The aim of the trails is to get families out and about in London, encouraging them to enjoy and learn about this incredible city. Learning shouldn’t all be confined to the classroom, and there is such a wealth of knowledge embedded in London’s streets, culture and architecture.

The trails are aimed at families with children at key stage 2 and 3 level. Each trail equips you with a map of the area showing the trail route and the points of interest. At each point, the booklets provide interesting information and a series of activities and challenges to complete. This is a great form of interactive outdoor learning, transforming the city into one marvelous outdoor classroom, or playground (you might want to use the latter description to sell the idea to your young ones)! The tasks are very accessible and aim to cover a wide spectrum of curriculum subjects.

Until 30th September 2017, you and your family can even win a prize by simply participating! Just tweet a photo taken on your trail and tag it #LondonIsOpen. Prizes are given out weekly.

Each booklet also offers information about various free and family focused events in the area it covers. We hope the trails will help you and your family find out more about this brilliant city and have fun too! You can either pick up solid copies from various locations or download them here

Here’s what Sadiq Khan has to say:

“London is full of culture, science and stories. Our new London Curriculum trails are a great way for families to discover their city together. I hope they encourage Londoners of all ages to explore our unique open spaces. There’s no place on earth like it.”

-Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London

The new trails cover the following areas:

  • The City of London
  • The Creative Quarter (South Kensington)
  • The Knowledge Quarter (Kings Cross)
  • South Bank

The London Curriculum Team are also launching a brand new trail, “The River”, so that families can enjoy finding out all about the Thames, too. It will be launched at Totally Thames 2017. They’re very keen for as many families as possible to get involved!

The launch happens at Potters Fields, SE1 2AA on Sunday 17 September from 1pm to 4pm. It will be a fantastic afternoon of activities themed around the famous river! No need to book – just turn up! At the event you can collect a free copy of all the trails and join in loads of exciting free workshops and activities. Find out all about it here.

The summer holidays might be over but that’s no reason to stop exploring and discovering with your family!
